Due to the high cost of creating a mural, the application process is extremely competitive. Having community support and volunteers ready to help in the implementation of the mural if it is chosen. It is also necessary to have a pre-determined wall already approved. Apply now!

Know a business that would like to sponsor MAP?

Tell them about Wall Ball!
PHILADELPHIA, June 7, 2011 - The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program recognized Brownstein Group as its 2011 Wall Ball on June 1, 2011 at the Piazza at Schmidt’s. The largest fundraising event for the Mural Arts Program, Wall Ball helps to raise vital operating funds to continue the organization’s award-winning programs.

As this year’s Wall Ball Honoree, Brownstein Group was recognized for its continued commitment and various contributions to the Mural Arts Program. For over three years, Brownstein Group has worked closely with the Program to tell their unique story and give them a stronger voice in the Greater Philadelphia area.

“As an active member of the arts scene in Philadelphia, a relationship with the Mural Arts Program seemed only natural,” said Marc Brownstein, President and CEO of Brownstein Group. “We are honored to be recognized for our work and look forward to continuing to support the growth of the Program.”

Each year, Wall Ball provides critical financial support to the Mural Arts Program, the largest public art program in the United States. This year’s event featured silent and live auctions, live entertainment and mural painting, as well as hors d’oeuvres prepared by Georges Perrier and Marc Vetri, to help raise funds for the organization. With this financial support, the Mural Arts Program can continue to beautify the Greater Philadelphia communities with public murals and engage thousands of youth through art education and outreach programs.

The Knight Foundation is one organization that provides funding...

The Knight Foundation is one organization that provides funding to the Mural Arts Program.
Casting a wide net

The Citizens Bank Foundation announced on July 7 a $200,000 grant to Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program. The grant signifies both a partnership with the city and the Mural Arts Program, and the launching of an 18-month project called “How We Fish.”

The How We Fish initiative will begin with a work force development summit and continue with a series of community forums between 2011 and 2012. The initiative will end with the installation of a new mural that will celebrate work.

Daniel K. Fitzpatrick, president and CEO of Citizens Bank in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, said the partnership will continue beyond the grant, and that Citizens Bank will be involved throughout the two years.

“It will culminate in a mural on 8th Street, but the process will be a series of community symposiums coming together,” Fitzpatrick said.

The name reflects the saying, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” It’s designed to serve as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue about work force development and job creation in Philadelphia.

“We want this to have a grass-roots orientation as well as a higher level business orientation, so what we’re really doing is connecting potential employees with potential employers,” Fitzpatrick said.

The mural will be painted on parachute cloth. The organization aims to involve hundreds of individuals to participate in its creation. It will be installed over an existing mural at 125 N. 8th St., at the intersection of 8th and Cherry streets. The mural is expected to be installed during the summer of 2012.

Murals stay: No budget too tight for arts money
BRIAN...

Murals stay: No budget too tight for arts money

BRIAN HICKEYPHILADELPHIA28 March 2011 10:15

Most budget talks focus on streamlining, slashing or trimming. Though all city departments have been asked find 1.5 to 3 percent cuts this year, the third day of City Council’s budget hearings featured a half hour of compliments for the Mural Arts Program, which wasn’t asked to do any cutting.

When executive director Jane Golden finished with her operating-budget request yesterday, Councilman James Kenney said the program “maximizes, more than any other [agency] in the city, the use of taxpayer dollars.” Then he lauded the “what you get from us versus what you generate” numbers.

Golden focused on benefits to the city in jobs created, underserved youths educated, public safety and sustainable communities. The city contributes nearly $1 million, which helps them attract private and grant dollars for an annual $7.6 million operating budget.

“From what I see from cities calling me, it’s a rarity,” Golden said of the city support. “When I hear that kind of feedback, it’s a wonderful morale booster for me. It makes us want to work harder.”

It’s a rarity because arts programs have traditionally topped the fiscal chopping block.

Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance spokesman Karim Olaechea said yesterday that both city and state budget proposals “continue funding for the arts even during these difficult economic times.” Since the budgets aren’t finalized yet, they’ll continue highlighting arts as “a great return on a modest investment.”
